The Art of Idyllwild
The mountain town of Idyllwild is known for its natural beauty and outdoor activities, but it is also home to a thriving arts community. Idyllwild has long been a haven for creatives and artists, including Hollywood stars, photographers, fine artists, and students at world-famous Idyllwild Arts Academy. From Ansel Adams and Frank Sinatra to Woody Guthrie and David Dastmalchian, generations of artists have found inspiration in the majestic landscape. Today, painters, potters, sculptors, jewelers and photographers make their art here in Idyllwild.
Art lovers will find art throughout the town, from public art installations to intimate galleries and artist studios.
Idyllwild Deer Sightings
For more than 10 years, painted Idyllwild deer have brought art into every corner of the Idyllwild community. Each recycled aluminium deer was painted by a local artist, and each one has a unique story and design. You’ll find them placed throughout the town, with most found near a local hotel, restaurant and shop, thanks to the local businesses who sponsored the herd. Some of our favorites are “Samuel T. Deerfly” at Idy Park and a sweet doe at Strawberry Creek Inn. Grab a map at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society, the AAI Bulletin Board, or many of the town’s galleries and find your favorite among the herd.
Art Alliance of Idyllwild Events
In addition to the Idyllwild Deer, the Art Alliance sponsors community art events throughout the year; perfect dates to plan a mountain getaway around.Their signature event is October’s Art Walk and Wine Tasting, with 15 wineries, 20 artist booths, and live music throughout town. Smaller events throughout the year provide more opportunities to connect with local artists in a curated experience. Get tickets to the events or learn more about the Art Alliance on their website.
Local Galleries
For a more personal experience, explore Idyllwild’s artist galleries and studios—there’s one around every corner. You can pick up a gallery map at the kiosk near town hall, but you can also just explore around the town. Be sure to explore the small pedestrian alleys and side streets, and stop at one of the town’s many cafes or ice cream shops for a break between galleries. Art is Everywhere
Keep your eyes peeled as you stroll through town, you never know when a mural or artwork will appear. One of the town’s largest artworks is a mural dedicated to the fire fighters and first responders, located on the back of the library. A carved mural on the back of the Fort is dedicated to Idyllwild History, and is one of many wood carvings throughout town—you can also visit Alastair the Squirrel at Idywlld Inn and Mama Bear at Mama’s Egg House. One of the town’s newest murals is a Star Wars Bounty Hunter mural at the Rustic Theater, painted as part of a tribute event this spring.
The Craft of Beer
At Idyllwild Brewpub, head brewer Bridget makes beermaking into an art of its own. Combining pure mountain water, thoughtfully chosen hops, fresh yeast, and trace minerals, she creates beers that are works of art you can enjoy after your gallery tour.
