Black oaks turned gold among the pines, seen from above in fall

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Idyllwild depends on what you're after: black oaks turning in November, snow from December to February, or 85-degree days while the desert passes 100. Each season on the Hill, with the numbers.

The weather averages are NOAA's 30-year normals for the Idyllwild station, 1991 to 2020.

Idyllwild has four real seasons, which is rarer in Southern California than it should be. The village sits at about 5,400 feet, so it runs 20 degrees cooler than the desert in summer and gets snow most winters. The numbers on this page are 30-year averages from the weather station in town. Any given week can beat them, so for this week, check Weather & Roads.

The short answer

  • For snow: January and February, and go when it has just fallen.
  • For fall color: October to mid-November.
  • To get out of the heat: June through September.
  • For hiking without snow or heat: May, and late September through October.
  • For the parade: the Fourth of July.
  • For the stars: any clear night near a new moon, and the meteor showers below.

Whenever you come, the events calendar shows what’s on.

Idyllwild in fall

September to November. Warm days, crisp nights and the black oaks turning gold among the pines: fall is a fine time to be on the Hill. Average highs fall from about 81°F in September to 72°F in October and 62°F in November. Nights cool quickly: lows average 50°F in September and 35°F by November, so bring layers.

The color comes from the black oaks, one of the few deciduous trees among the pines. Their leaves turn gold and orange, and the peak in Idyllwild is usually October to mid-November. It is a quieter show than New England’s, and a good excuse for a walk through the village.

Fall is also dry. October averages just over an inch of rain, which makes it a good month for the trails before winter. See our hiking guide for where to go.

Late November opens the holiday season with a town tradition: the village tree lighting, which has run for more than 60 years. Check the events calendar for this year’s date.

Idyllwild in winter

December to February. This is when the Hill gets most of its snow, and the village under fresh snow is worth the drive. It can come as early as November and as late as April. Winter highs average about 54°F to 55°F, and nights drop to around 30°F. The Idyllwild station averages 30.7 inches of snow a year. February is the snowiest month, at almost 10 inches, and also the wettest. Cozy up by a fireplace; most rooms at Idyllwild Inn, Tahquitz Pines Retreat and Strawberry Creek Inn have fireplaces.

Those are averages, and winters here swing hard. State Parks puts it plainly: wet winters can bring several feet of snow, and dry ones only a few inches. So if snow is the point of your trip, watch the forecast and go when it has just fallen, rather than booking a date in October and hoping.

Snow brings chain controls on Highways 243 and 74. Carry chains that fit your tires, and check Weather & Roads before you leave; it explains the chain codes. Getting Here covers the routes.

If you plan to hike in snow, State Parks recommends traction devices like microspikes or crampons. For trail conditions, check with Mount San Jacinto State Park or the San Jacinto Ranger District before you go.

The Geminid meteor shower peaks around December 13 and 14, which makes a clear winter night worth staying up for. Dress for below freezing.

Snow play

If you’re here for the snow, you’ll want to play in it. There are several snow play areas, including Hurkey Creek Park, McCall Park, Idyllwild Regional Park, the Idyllwild Community Playground, Mount San Jacinto State Park and the Idyllwild Nature Center. The shops at Idyllwild Inn and Tahquitz Pines Retreat stock a few sleds, and any of the outfitters in town can help if you need warm clothes.

Idyllwild in spring

March to May. Spring comes slowly at this height. March and April still average about 4 inches of snow each, and highs climb from about 59°F in March to 71°F in May. Lows stay near freezing through March.

By May the rain has mostly stopped: it averages well under an inch, down from over 5 inches in February. The trails dry out as the season goes on, and May is warm enough to hike without the summer heat.

Water runs in the seasonal creeks, and wildflowers bloom in the wilderness. The Ernie Maxwell Scenic Trail is especially pretty in the spring, with waterfalls and cascades down the mountain.

Idyllwild in summer

June to August. Summer is when the Hill earns its keep for anyone coming up from the desert. In July, Palm Springs averages a high of 108°F. Idyllwild averages 85°F, about an hour’s drive away. Los Angeles averages 75°F at the airport, so for coastal visitors summer here is warmer than home, with cool nights: July and August lows average about 55°F.

June is the driest month of the year, at barely a tenth of an inch of rain. July and August get a little more.

The Fourth of July means the parade. The Rotary Club of Idyllwild’s parade starts at Four Corners in Fern Valley and runs down North Circle Drive. Free outdoor concerts at Butterfield Amphitheater run throughout the summer season. For everything else on in summer, check the events calendar.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks around August 12 and 13. Warm August nights make it the easiest time of year to lie out under the sky.

Stargazing in Idyllwild

At about 5,400 feet, Idyllwild’s night sky is darker than the cities below. You don’t need a telescope. A clear night away from porch lights will do.

A few things help:

  • Go near the new moon. A bright moon washes out all but the brightest stars. Check a moon calendar before you pick your dates.
  • Time it for a meteor shower. The Perseids peak around August 12 and 13, the Geminids around December 13 and 14, and the Quadrantids around January 3 and 4.
  • Dress for it. Even in July, nights average about 55°F. In winter they drop below freezing.
  • Let your eyes adjust. Keep your phone in your pocket for a while and the faint stars come out.

Where locals go. Inspiration Point, at the end of Double View Drive, has open space and a wide view of the sky. Or try the turnout at Saunders Meadow, by the highway.

30.7 INCHES OF SNOW IN AN AVERAGE YEAR

That is the 1991 to 2020 average at the Idyllwild weather station, and February is the snowiest month. Some winters bring several feet, some only a few inches, so check before you plan around it.
