North Circle Drive in Idyllwild, cars along the shops and Tahquitz Rock above the trees

Is Idyllwild worth visiting?

Yes, if what you want is a mountain town that is still a town. Idyllwild sits at about 5,400 feet in the San Jacinto Mountains, under Tahquitz Rock and Suicide Rock. It’s about 2 hours’ drive from Los Angeles or San Diego and about an hour from Palm Springs, and around 4,200 people live in Idyllwild and Pine Cove year-round.

It’s a small place, not a resort, and proud of it. There are no big attractions to queue for. People come up for the trails that start at the edge of the village, for granite that climbers have been coming to since the 1930s, for the galleries and a one-screen cinema that has been running since 1952, and for cooler air than the valleys below. If you want nightlife or a theme park, this isn’t it. If you want a long walk, a good dinner and a quiet night, it is.

Around Town

The village is where most visits start and end. Walk between the galleries, catch a film at the Rustic Theatre, visit the free museum and bring the dog. Around Town covers everything off the trail, including our 2-day itinerary.

Outdoors

The mountain is the other half. Hiking starts from Humber Park and the edge of town, climbers come for Tahquitz Rock, and there are campgrounds, fishing and mountain biking within a short drive. Outdoors has the trails, the permits and the rules.

Before you drive up, check the roads and weather. Every way up the Hill comes in on Highway 243 or Highway 74, and in winter Caltrans can require chains on both.
